A live-action feature adaptation of the landmark Harmony Gold anime series

After an immense alien spacecraft crashes on Earth, humanity rebuilds it and harnesses its technology to create transforming fighter planes and giant robotic weapons. When a vast alien armada arrives to recover the ship and the mysterious energy source hidden aboard it — Protoculture — an untested generation of pilots becomes the planet's last defense against an interstellar invasion.

The feature was based on The Macross Saga, the first chapter of Harmony Gold’s influential 85-episode animated epic. Premiering in American syndication in 1985, ROBOTECH helped introduce a generation of Western viewers to the serialized storytelling, moral complexity and transforming mecha of Japanese anime.

Daniel Shafer, Tobey Maguire and producer Drew Crevello (WECRASHED, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS) set up ROBOTECH at Warner Bros. as a large-scale science-fiction franchise. Academy Award-winning producers Charles Roven (THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy, OPPENHEIMER, MAN OF STEEL) of Atlas Entertainment and Akiva Goldsman (BEAUTIFUL MIND, BATMAN FOREVER, I AM LEGEND) of Weed Road Pictures later joined the project.

Shafer developed the adaptation with four-time Academy Award nominee Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, RETURN OF THE JEDI), S. Craig Zahler (BONE TOMAHAWK, BRIGANDS OF RATTLECREEK), Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (SPIDER-MAN 2, WEDNESDAY), and Tom Rob Smith.
